The transfer portal is a compliance database, not a recruiting service. When an athlete tells their school they intend to transfer, a compliance officer enters their name, and coaches at other schools become free to contact them.
Being in the portal does not market you. It only makes you contactable. Everything that happens next comes from the profile, film, and outreach you control.
Entry windows and deadlines
Each sport has defined windows tied to the end of its season and, in some sports, a second window after a coaching change. Missing a window usually means waiting until the next one, so confirm the current dates with your compliance office before you tell anyone you are leaving.

Athletes who enter with a complete public profile get contacted far more than athletes who enter and then start building one.
How to position a transfer profile
Lead with production at your current level, not high school numbers. State your remaining eligibility, your academic standing, and the specific role you want. Coaches are filling a hole on the roster — tell them which hole you fill.
