Recruiting Highlight Video: How to Build One Coaches Watch

How to build a recruiting highlight video that gets watched: length, first-play strategy, jersey identification, stats overlays, and where to host it.

Assume twenty seconds of attention

A recruiting coordinator opens your film between meetings. If your best play is not in the first twenty seconds, there is no second chance. Lead with the single clip that proves your best trait.

The structure that works

Open with a short title card: name, class year, position, school, height and weight, and one verified number. Then three to five minutes of plays, strongest to weakest, ending with a contact card.

  • check_circleTitle card under five seconds
  • check_circleArrow or circle on you at the start of every clip
  • check_circleNo music, or music low enough to ignore
  • check_circleContact card with your profile link and coach reference

Show the trait, not the scoreboard

Pick clips that isolate a specific skill — closing speed, first step, footwork, court vision, arm strength. Highlight reels full of scoring plays against weak opponents tell a coach nothing about whether you translate up a level.

Hosting and linking

Host on a platform coaches already open, keep the link permanent, and put that same link on your athlete profile so it never goes stale. Update the reel after every notable game rather than once a year.
