How coaches can find more athletes

Most coaching businesses are not short of ability; they are short of a system. Visibility, conversion, retention and referral each leak independently, and fixing the cheapest leak first is almost always retention.

Free for coaches

  • Public coach profile with specialisms and availability
  • Directory listing athletes can filter and search
  • Direct enquiries — no lead fees, no commission
  • Athlete roster with measurables and progress
  • Share training plans, drills and video feedback

Get found for what you actually coach

Athletes do not search for "coach". They search for a sport, a discipline and a place: goalkeeper coach, sprint mechanics, padel lessons, marathon plan. If your profile does not contain those words, it is invisible to those searches.

Write for the search, not for a brochure. Sport, disciplines, levels coached, town and surrounding areas, remote availability, session formats and current openings — in plain language.

  • Name the sport and each discipline you coach explicitly
  • Name your town and the areas you travel to
  • State remote availability if you coach online
  • List levels: beginner, club, county, semi-pro
  • Keep current openings visible and accurate

Convert the enquiries you already get

Most coaches lose more athletes at the reply stage than anywhere else. An enquiry answered within a few hours converts at a multiple of one answered in three days.

Give the enquiry somewhere to land: a specific next step with a date. "Happy to help, what are you looking for?" puts the work back on them; "I have Tuesday at six or Thursday at seven — which suits?" converts.

Build a referral loop

Coaching referrals come from results made visible. An athlete who posts their new personal best, tagging the work behind it, markets you to exactly the audience you want.

Ask directly, once, at a high point: after a personal best or a selection, ask the athlete if they know one person who would benefit. At a high point almost everyone says yes.

  • Ask for one referral after each visible win, never as a standing request
  • Post athlete milestones publicly with their permission
  • Stay on good terms with clubs — they refer overflow constantly
  • Refer out what you do not coach; it comes back

Retention is cheaper than acquisition

An athlete who stays a year is worth several who stay six weeks and cost you nothing extra to find. Attrition is usually caused by invisible progress, not by poor coaching.

Fix it with measurement and rhythm: baseline in session one, a stated review point, and a short written summary at the end of each block showing what changed. Athletes renew on evidence.

Starting a coaching business from zero

The first ten athletes come from proximity: your club, your former teammates, the local school, the physio who sees your sport all day. Tell all of them precisely what you coach and who you are looking for.

Get the boring things right early — qualification, safeguarding, insurance, a simple cancellation policy and a clear rate. Everything after that is visibility and consistency, both of which are free.

Step by step

  1. 01

    Rewrite the profile for search

Sport, disciplines, levels, town, remote availability, current openings. Plain words.

  2. 02

    Answer every enquiry same day

Reply with two concrete times. Speed and specificity beat polish.

  3. 03

    Publish weekly

One drill, correction or result a week. Consistency compounds; brilliance once a quarter does not.

  4. 04

    Measure every block

Baseline, review point, written summary. Evidence is what makes athletes renew.

  5. 05

    Ask for one referral

After a visible win, ask for exactly one introduction. Once, not as a standing ask.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to fill a coaching schedule?

Coaches who publish a complete profile, reply the same day and post weekly typically see steady enquiries within a season. Referrals become the largest source after roughly a year of consistent results.

Should I pay for ads?

Rarely, and never before the profile, reply speed and referral loop are working. Paid traffic sent to a weak conversion process just makes the leak more expensive.

Does it cost anything for coaches to join?

No. Creating a coach profile, appearing in the directory, messaging athletes and posting to the feed is free. There is no listing fee and no commission on the work you win.

Can athletes see my profile before signing up?

Yes. Coach profiles and the directory are publicly browsable and indexable, so an athlete or parent can read about you first. An account is only needed to message or save you.
