How to find players for a football team
Every amateur football team is short a goalkeeper, a left-sided defender or a body for Sunday. Finding players is a repeatable process, not luck — and most teams skip the two steps that matter most.
What clubs get free
- Public club page players can find in search
- Player directory filtered by sport, position and location
- Squad and group messaging with attachments
- Tryout, fixture and fundraiser posts
- Roster views with profiles and measurables
Step 1: Define the gap before you search
Write down the position, the standard, the age group and the availability you need. "Anyone who can play" attracts people who will not last a month and costs you the trial slots you needed for a real fit.
Step 2: Look where players already are
Players searching for a team look in three places: local search, sport-specific directories and word of mouth from current players. Be present in all three.
Search the athlete directory by sport, position and location, save a shortlist, and post your opening publicly so the players you have not found can find you.
- Filter the directory by football, position and city
- Post the opening publicly with date, ground and standard
- Ask every current player for one name — the highest-converting source there is
- Keep a warm list all year, not just in pre-season
Step 3: Write messages people reply to
Three sentences: why you are contacting them specifically, what the team is and what standard, and one concrete date to come down. Copy-pasted broadcasts get ignored; a personalised first line roughly doubles reply rates.
Step 4: Run a trial worth attending
Announce three weeks out, remind at one week and one day, and give trialists a named contact so nobody stands alone at the side of the pitch. Design the session around the gap you are filling.
Reply to everyone within 48 hours, including the players you turn down. Rejected politely today, they recommend you to a teammate next season.

Frequently asked questions
How many players should I contact per signing?
Roughly ten personalised contacts per signing. About half reply, half of those trial, and half of those fit and commit.
When is the best time to recruit?
Off-season. The strongest available players are usually settled before pre-season starts, so contact them early and keep the list warm.
Does it cost anything to run a club on AthletiLink?
No. Creating a club presence, posting to the feed, searching the member directory and messaging players is free. You never need a paid plan to recruit or communicate with your squad.
Can players find us without an account?
Yes. Club and athlete pages, the feed and the directory are all publicly browsable, so prospective players and parents can read about you before they sign up. An account is only needed to message, post or save people.
