College Volleyball Recruiting: Complete Guide

College volleyball recruiting is decided in club season, not high school season. Coaches filter on height and reach, then evaluate mechanics from full-set film.

College volleyball recruiting

What volleyball coaches evaluate first

  • Height, approach touch and block jump — measured on a Vertec, with the date
  • Club level and whether you're a starter in the top division of your age group
  • Full-set film showing repeatable mechanics and defensive movement
  • Position clarity: OH, opposite, setter, middle, libero or DS
  • Academics, especially for the many strong D3 and academic D1 programs

Division benchmarks

Volleyball recruiting benchmarks by NCAA division
MetricD1D2D3
Outside hitter height6'0"+5'10"+5'8"+
Approach touch (OH)9'10"+9'6"+9'2"+
Middle blocker height6'2"+6'0"+5'10"+
Block jump9'6"+9'2"+8'10"+
Core GPA3.2+3.0+3.5+ (aid is academic)

Benchmarks are typical recruiting ranges, not cut-offs — programs vary by conference and roster need. Confirm current NCAA rules and scholarship limits with the NCAA before making decisions.

Scholarships in volleyball

Women's D1 volleyball is a head-count sport with 12 full scholarships, which makes D2 (8 equivalency), NAIA and D3 with academic aid the realistic path for most recruits. Men's volleyball is equivalency with far fewer programs.

College volleyball recruiting FAQ

When does college volleyball recruiting start?

Under current NCAA D1 rules, coaches may begin contact on June 15 after sophomore year. Club season of your sophomore year is when you should already have measured numbers and film published.

How tall do you need to be to play college volleyball?

About 6'0"+ for D1 outside hitters and 6'2"+ for middles, dropping a couple of inches at each level. Approach touch and block jump can offset height, and libero and DS roles are far less height-driven.

Does high school volleyball matter for recruiting?

Very little for evaluation — club season overlaps the recruiting calendar and features the events coaches attend. High school still matters for eligibility and academics.

How do I get seen at a volleyball qualifier?

Email the coaching staff your team name, court assignments, match times and jersey number a week ahead, then follow up with film after the event.
