How to organize sports tryouts that fill the right places

A tryout is a recruitment tool, not an open training session. The clubs that sign the players they wanted decide what they are looking for before anyone shows up.

What clubs get free

  • Public club page players can find in search
  • Player directory filtered by sport, position and location
  • Squad and group messaging with attachments
  • Tryout, fixture and fundraiser posts
  • Roster views with profiles and measurables

Six weeks out: decide what you are looking for

Name the positions and the attributes. Two or three per position is enough — pace and recovery, first touch under pressure, willingness to communicate. If you cannot write it down, you cannot assess it consistently.

Three weeks out: publish and promote

Publish one post with date, time, venue, who it is for, what to bring and what it costs. Ambiguity is the single biggest cause of low turnout.

Public posts are indexable, so athletes searching for trials in your sport and area can find yours. Share the same link everywhere rather than rewriting the details each time.

  • One post, all the practical details, no ambiguity
  • Reminders at one week and one day — attendance roughly doubles
  • A named contact who will meet people at the gate
  • Direct invitations to your saved shortlist

On the day: run it like an assessment

Design drills around the attributes you listed. Give every trialist meaningful minutes in their actual position, and take written notes during the session — memory after ninety minutes is worthless.

Have someone whose only job is welcoming people. Trialists who talk to nobody in the first ten minutes rarely come back regardless of ability.

Within 48 hours: answer everybody

Signings get first session, kit, fees and a named contact in the same message. Rejections get a short, kind reply and an invitation to the next open session where relevant. Ghosting costs you future recruits.

Step by step

  1. 01

    Six weeks out

List the positions and two or three assessable attributes for each.

  2. 02

    Three weeks out

Publish one detailed post and invite your shortlist directly.

  3. 03

One week and one day out

Remind. This is the difference between a full and empty session.

  4. 04

    On the day

Position-specific minutes, written notes, a named welcomer.

  5. 05

    Within 48 hours

Reply to every attendee with a decision and next steps.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a tryout be?

Ninety minutes is enough for most sports if the session is designed around what you are assessing. Longer sessions mostly measure fitness.

Should we charge for trials?

Most amateur clubs do not, and free trials get better turnout. If you must cover pitch hire, say the amount in the post rather than at the gate.

Does it cost anything to run a club on AthletiLink?

No. Creating a club presence, posting to the feed, searching the member directory and messaging players is free. You never need a paid plan to recruit or communicate with your squad.

Can players find us without an account?

Yes. Club and athlete pages, the feed and the directory are all publicly browsable, so prospective players and parents can read about you before they sign up. An account is only needed to message, post or save people.
