College Softball Recruiting: Complete Guide

College softball recruiting happens in travel ball, at showcases and at campus camps. Coaches filter on position-specific measurables — pitching velocity, home-to-first time, overhand velocity — then confirm with film.

What softball coaches evaluate first

  • Position-specific measurables with the date and method recorded
  • Travel-ball level and the showcases your team attends
  • Defensive footwork and arm play, evaluated from fielding film
  • At-bats against real velocity, not tee or cage footage alone
  • Academics, since D3 and academic-D1 programs recruit heavily on grades

Scholarships in softball

D1 softball is an equivalency sport with about 12 scholarships across a roster of 20+, so most recruits receive partial offers stacked with academic aid. D2 carries roughly 7.2, NAIA offers athletic aid, and D3 uses academic and need-based aid only.

College softball recruiting FAQ

How fast do you have to pitch for college softball?

Roughly 63+ mph for D1, 59–63 for D2 and 56–60 for D3, with movement, spin and command mattering as much as raw velocity. Always list the radar device and date.

When does softball recruiting start?

Under current NCAA D1 rules, coaches may contact recruits from September 1 of junior year, but travel-ball identification begins earlier — have measurables and film published by sophomore year.

Are softball showcases or camps better?

Camps at your target schools are usually more productive, because the deciding staff evaluates you directly rather than scanning hundreds of athletes across several fields.

What film should softball recruits post?

Separate, labelled clips: fielding at your position, live at-bats against real velocity and, for pitchers, a bullpen from a fixed angle showing each pitch type.
