How to recruit players for a sports team

Stage 1: Define the squad gap

Write down, position by position, where the squad is thin, where it is deep, and where a departure would be fatal. Recruit against that list, not against whoever happens to be available.

Include age balance. A squad that is strong now but has nobody under 21 has a gap even though every position is filled this season.

• Positions with no cover behind the first choice
• Positions whose starter is likely to leave within a season
• Age-group gaps that create a cliff in two or three years
• Skill gaps: a set-piece taker, a libero, a distance runner for relays

Stage 2: Where to find players

Search beats broadcast. A directory you can filter by sport, position and location gives you a shortlist of plausible fits in minutes; a public plea gives you whoever happens to be scrolling.

Do not neglect the obvious sources either: players who trialled and were not selected last year, members' colleagues and siblings, lapsed members, and players from clubs that folded locally.

Stage 3: Messages that get replies

A good first message is short, specific and gives a concrete next step. Reference something from their profile so it is obvious you read it, state exactly why they fit the gap, and name a date they could turn up.

Avoid the two failure modes: a copy-paste blast, which reads as spam, and an essay about the club's history, which nobody finishes. Three sentences and a date outperforms both.

Stage 4: Organizing sports tryouts

Publish three weeks out with date, time, venue, kit, cost and what you are assessing. Ambiguity on any of those costs attendance.

On the day: greet everyone by name at the gate, have a named person for trialists, run drills that show the specific attributes you are recruiting for, and take notes as you go rather than reconstructing from memory that night.

Stage 5: Closing the signing

For the players you want, make joining concrete in the same message: first session date, kit, fees, and who will meet them. Every unanswered question is a chance for a rival club to answer theirs faster.
