BSAC Ocean Diver: The Club Route Into UK Diving
BSAC training runs through local branches rather than commercial centres. It is slower — theory evenings and pool sessions across a couple of months — but it is cheap, and you finish with a group of divers who dive together every weekend.
Quick facts
- Minimum age
- 12 years
- Depth limit
- 20 m
- Typical duration
- Weekly club sessions over 2–3 months
- Prerequisites
- Club membership and a swim test
What the certification covers
- Theory lectures at the branch
- Sheltered water skill sessions in a pool
- Five open water lessons, usually in a UK quarry or coastal site
- Rescue skills introduced from the start
Why the club route suits UK conditions
UK diving is cold, dark and tidal, and the biggest barrier is not certification but having reliable buddies and boat access. A branch solves both, which is why so many UK divers who trained abroad end up joining one afterwards.
Ocean Diver's 20 m limit is deliberately conservative for a reason: most UK shore diving happens well inside it.
- Typical cost: 250–400 GBP including membership, far cheaper long-term than commercial courses
- Branches usually own compressors, boats and some kit for members
- Progression to Sports Diver continues in the same club
