Dive sites in and around Sydney
Shelly Beach, Manly
Protected aquatic reserve, 5–12 m, extremely easy entry, huge fish life.
Bare Island, La Perouse
The classic Sydney dive, 6–18 m, weedy seadragons and sponge gardens.
Kurnell (Steps, Monument)

Clovelly / Gordons Bay

Swell, not season, decides your dive
Sydney sites are exposed to different swell directions, so local divers pick the site on the morning based on the swell chart rather than booking weeks ahead. Having a few buddies who dive regularly is how you learn which site works on which day.
Winter is the surprise favourite: cold but far clearer water, and the weedy seadragons are easiest to find.
- 5 mm year round; many divers use 7 mm or a hood June–September
- Shore diving is free — air fills 10–15 AUD
- Boat trips to Magic Point for grey nurse sharks run most weekends
