PADI Open Water Diver: The Complete Beginner Certification Guide
Open Water Diver is the certification almost every diver starts with. It is recognised worldwide, never expires, and lets you rent gear, book boat trips and dive with a buddy to 18 metres without an instructor.

What the certification covers
- Five knowledge development sections, usually online before you travel

- Dive planning with tables or a computer
What the course actually involves
The theory is done online at your own pace and takes most people six to eight hours spread over a week. The in-water part is where the certification is earned: five confined water sessions to build the skills, then four open water dives where you repeat them in the sea, a lake or a quarry.
Nothing in the course is a fitness test. Instructors are looking for calm, controlled divers who can solve a small problem underwater without rushing to the surface.

- Ask whether the price includes e-learning, certification fees and equipment rental
- Class sizes of four students per instructor or fewer mean much more in-water time
- Medical questionnaire required; some answers need a doctor's sign-off before you start
After the card arrives
New divers lose skills fast if they stop. The best thing you can do in the first three months is log ten more dives with people who dive regularly — a club, a dive centre's fun-dive schedule, or a buddy at a similar level.

How long does PADI Open Water take?

Does the certification expire?
No. The card is for life, but most centres recommend a refresher if you have not dived in 12 months.
How deep can I dive with Open Water?
18 metres / 60 feet with a certified buddy. Advanced Open Water extends that to 30 metres.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
You need a 200 m swim (any stroke, no time limit) and a 10 minute float. Comfort in water matters more than speed.
