PADI Advanced Open Water: Is It Worth It, and What Do You Learn?

Advanced Open Water is five guided adventure dives rather than an exam. Two are compulsory — deep and underwater navigation — and you choose the other three from options such as wreck, night, drift, peak performance buoyancy and enriched air.

What the certification covers

  • Deep adventure dive to a maximum of 30 metres
  • Underwater navigation with compass and natural references
  • Three elective adventure dives you choose with your instructor
  • Each dive counts as the first dive of the matching speciality course

Choosing the right three dives

Pick electives for the diving you will actually do at home. Cold quarry divers get more from peak performance buoyancy and dry suit; warm-water travellers get more from drift and wreck; anyone planning multiple dives a day should look at enriched air.

Night diving is the elective people rate highest afterwards, and it is also the one that most benefits from doing it with a club rather than alone with an instructor.

  • Typical cost: 250–450 EUR/USD for the five dives
  • Peak performance buoyancy is the single biggest improvement for most new divers
  • Wreck and deep together open up most European and US coastal diving
  • Log the dives properly — operators check them before deep or technical trips

When to take it

There is no minimum dive count beyond Open Water, but the course is far more useful at around 15–20 logged dives, once buoyancy is stable and you are not thinking about your kit. Rushing straight from Open Water usually means paying to practise skills you have not consolidated yet.

Is Advanced Open Water worth it?

Yes if you dive more than a couple of times a year. It removes the 18 m limit and most liveaboards and wreck trips ask for it.

Is there an exam?

There is short knowledge review reading per adventure dive, but no final exam.

How many dives should I have first?

Around 15–20 logged dives makes the course much more valuable than taking it immediately after Open Water.
