PADI Rescue Diver: The Course Every Diver Says Changed Them

Rescue Diver shifts your attention from yourself to everyone else on the boat. You learn to spot a stressed diver before there is an incident, manage a panicked diver at the surface, bring an unresponsive diver up, and run a search pattern.

How hard is it really?

Physically it is the most demanding recreational course — expect long surface swims, towing a fully kitted diver, and repeating scenarios until they are automatic. It is also the course people describe as the most fun, because the scenarios are unpredictable.

You need Emergency First Response (CPR and first aid) completed within the previous 24 months. Most centres run it as a bolt-on day before the course.

  • Typical cost: 350–500 EUR/USD, plus 120–200 for EFR
  • Required prerequisite for Divemaster and any professional route
  • Some clubs and dive charters give priority to rescue-certified volunteers

Practise it or lose it

Rescue skills decay quickly. Clubs that run an annual scenario day keep them sharp, and joining one is the easiest way to stay current without paying for another course.

Do I need EFR before Rescue Diver?

Yes — CPR and first aid training within the last 24 months. Most centres run EFR the day before.

Can I do Rescue after Open Water?

You need Advanced Open Water, or Adventure Diver with the underwater navigation dive.

How many dives do you need?

There is no fixed minimum, but the course is far easier at 25+ logged dives with stable buoyancy.
