PADI Divemaster: What the First Professional Rating Involves
Divemaster is the first professional rating: you can guide certified divers, assist instructors on courses and work at a dive centre. Most people do it as a full-time internship over a season rather than as a weekend course.

- 18 years
- Depth limit
- 40 m / 130 ft
- Typical duration
- 4–10 weeks internship
- Prerequisites
- Rescue Diver, 40 logged dives to start, 60 to certify

Internship or course?
A paid internship at a busy centre gives you hundreds of dives and real guiding experience; a short course gets you the card faster but with far less water time. Employers care about the second one much more than the first.
Ask any centre how many students per instructor, how many guided dives you will lead, and whether accommodation and gear are included before paying.
- Typical cost: 800–2,500 EUR/USD depending on region and inclusions
- Budget for annual professional membership and insurance on top
- Seasonal work is easier to find if you also speak a second language
- A public profile listing your certifications and languages makes you far easier for centres to find
